I would marry if I could but I can't. The other night my 6 year old son asked why his moms were "partners". I explained kindly that there are different legal definitions for relationships between adults who loved each other and his moms were in fact "civil unioned" rather than legally domestic partners. This all went over my son's head, as was intended. He asked if we were still married because he remembers being our ring bearer at our civil union ceremony last summer. I told of course we were just not legally. He seemed satisfied with this.
Because my son loves his moms, I could not bring myself to tell him that some people think his moms should not be married because they don't like people like us.
PS My daughter thinks we were all married last summer.
